Time Management
Time management is a powerful skill that helps you stay organized, meet deadlines, and reduce stress by using your time more efficiently. It also creates more room for personal time, contributing to a healthier work-life balance and overall well-being. If you often find yourself running behind, forgetting tasks, or constantly putting out fires instead of preventing them (not literally), the tips below can help you take control of your time both personally and professionally.

The Eisenhower Matrix
Helps you manage your time by sorting tasks into four categories:
-
- Urgent & Important – Do it now. Tasks with immediate deadlines and serious consequences.
- Important but Not Urgent – Schedule it. Tasks that support long-term goals and growth.
- Urgent but Not Important – Delegate it. Tasks that need quick action but can be handled by someone else.
- Not Urgent & Not Important – Eliminate it. Tasks that waste time and don’t add value.
-
- Plan your day by identifying which tasks are truly urgent and important.
- Avoid burnout by scheduling time for projects.
- Delegate effectively to free up time
- Cut distractions like unnecessary meetings, or emails.
-
- Prioritize self-care and family time as important but not urgent.
- Handle household tasks like paying bills or appointments before they become urgent.
- Say no to activities that don’t align with your goals or values.
- Create space for hobbies and rest by eliminating time-wasters like scrolling on your phone.

Start with Your Hardest Task
Tackling your most challenging task first thing in the day helps build momentum and reduces procrastination.
-
- Start your day by tackling the task you’ve been avoiding, it sets the tone for productivity. Use your peak energy hours for focused, deep work, and reduce stress by clearing the toughest item off your plate early.
- That morning game of office musical chairs to catch up on the night shift can wait. Use the quiet time before families and residents start needing you to knock out key tasks and get ahead.
-
- Begin with difficult chores or conversations to free up mental space for the rest of your day. You’ll build confidence and momentum by proving you can handle the hard stuff first.
- Scrolling through your phone to catch up on the latest drama might feel tempting, but that time flies. Instead, use your morning energy to get things done, you will feel more accomplished and less rushed later.
Distractions drain your time, energy, and focus. In today’s digital world, constant notifications, endless scrolling, and viral content can easily pull you away from what matters most. Minimizing these distractions helps you stay productive, present, and in control of your day.
-
- Silence notifications during focus time to avoid interruptions.
- Use tools like “Do Not Disturb” to stay on task.
- Create a clutter-free workspace that supports concentration.
- Be mindful of how often you check your phone, those quick glances add up fast.
-
- Set boundaries for screen time and social media- consider using app timers or digital wellbeing settings.
- Create quiet zones for reading, relaxing, or spending quality time with family.
- Replace morning or evening scrolling with intentional routines like journaling, reading, or planning your day.
- Remember: the internet will still be there later, your peace of mind and personal goals deserve your attention now!

Avoid Perfectionism
Perfectionism can lead to procrastination, burnout, and missed deadlines. Focus on progress, not perfection.]
How to Apply it at Work
-
-
Set realistic expectations for yourself and others.
-
Deliver work that’s “good enough” and refine later if needed.
-
Celebrate completed tasks instead of getting stuck in endlessly edits and tweaking.
-
-
-
Don’t let the fear of not doing something perfectly stop you from starting.
-
Enjoy hobbies just for the fun of it- say yes to that pickleball invite, even if you’ve never played.
-
Embrace the idea that “done is better than perfect." It will free up time and energy for new experiences and adventures.

Always the "Yes" person?
It is Time to Start Embracing the Power of "No"
Below are simple respectful ways to say no while keeping those positive relationships at work and in your personal life along with some tips.
Work related requests- If your boss hands you a task, it might not be the ideal moment to flex your “no” muscles
-
- “I would love to help, but I’m focused on a deadline and won’t be able to give this the attention it deserves.”
- “Thanks for thinking of me, but I’m not available to take on anything additional right now.”
- “I can’t commit to that at the moment, but if you would like I would be more than willing to visit it next week if it’s still needed.”
Personal requests- We all have that friend in our life that thinks free time means free help. Before your friend pulls a Ross and starts yelling “PIVOT”, it might be time to start saying “no”
-
- “I really appreciate the invite, but I can't this weekend, I need some time to recharge.”
- “I would love to help, but I have a lot going on right now and wouldn’t want to let you down.”
Taking care of yourself isn't selfish- it is necessary for your wellbeing and allows you to be the best version of yourself for others. Listen to your body and mind, they will usually tell you when it's time to slow down.
